The municipalty of Franekeradeel

The municipality of Frankeradeel consists of the city of Franeker, located centrally, and fourteen surrounding villages: Achlum, Dongjum, Firdgum, Herbayum, Hitzum, Oosterbierum, Peins, Pietersbierum, Ried, Sexbierum, Schalsum, Tzum, Tzummarum and Zweins. There are also two hamlets: Boer and Klooster-Lidlum.

The centre of Franeker, once a university city, has several tremendous historical buildings, but you can find these also in the surrounding villages. Franeker has also a recently reconstructed shopping area with mixture of attractive stores.

Franekeradeel has a long and rich history. There are findings of artifacts that date back to 500 BC. In this period the first terps were built. These are man made mounds or knolls and were built to be safe from the floods. Before there were any dykes, most villages were built on small patches of dry land, surrounded by marshes. Today, one can see many dykes in the landscape, the Slachtedijk is well known. From Oosterbierum to Rauwerd, close to Sneek, this dyke is about 40 km long.

Eise Eisinga Planetarium

The Eise Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker is the oldest planetarium in the world that still works. It was designed and constructed by woolcomber and amateur astronomer Eise Jelteszoon Eisinga between 1774 and 1781. He decided to build the planetarium to show that a particular constellation of the planets would not cause the end of the world. At the time, the public was very concerned by that. Eisinga wanted to show how the Solar System really works, and that there was no reason to fear a cosmic catastrophe. The Planetarium is very well preserved, and in 2006 it celebrates its 225th anniversary. Queen's Commissioner E.H.T.M. Nijpels of Friesland had the hounour to give the Planetarium the title ‘royal' on behalf of Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands.

Museum Martena

Franeker was a university city between 1585 and 1811. In Museum Martena there is a big collection of countless artifacts that reminds of this period in the history of Franeker. For example, one can find there the Senaatskamer, with many paintings of the professors that taught the students. The Museum also has contemporary expositions. Behind the museum is the Martena garden. In the months during spring, many people enjoy the rare species of plants that grow there.


Friesland number one sport is kaatsen, or Frisian handball. The sport might sound unfamiliar, but there are at least 50 other countries in the world where it is played.

Since Medieval times the sport is played in Friesland. The Kaatsmuseum opened in 1972 and it is the oldest sportsmuseum in The Netherlands. There is a large collection of prizes and attributes that play a role in the game. The museum is located in the Camminghastins since 1995. This building, dating back to Medieval times, can be found at the Voorstraat 2 in Franeker.

The Martinichurch

The Martinichurch in Franeker is located in the middle of the terp at the Breedeplaats. It is not exactly known when the church was built, probably in the 15th century. It is known, however, that there has been a church already at the same place in the year 1085. In the current church there is wood cutting dating from the 15th and 17th century. Impressive are the, mostly undamaged, 490 gravestones from the 16th to 18th century.

The Corncarriershouse

This building from the year 1934 can be found at the Zilverstraat 28 in Franeker. Here, all the grain, beers and wines were checked and from here transported. There is a permanent exhibition for viewing in the building.

The Cityhall

Franeker was a wealthy city during the 16th and 17th century, and the cityhall shows that. The building consists of two sections, one built between 1591 and 1595 and a second built in 1760. The oldest one was in use until 1997, nowadays it is used for weddings and official receptions. The unique leather wallpaper covered with goldleaves, found in the council- and weddinghall, is made in rococo-style. The cityhall can be found at the Raadhuisplein 1 and open for visiting between 13.30 and 17.30. Several other historical buldings and sightseeing locations can be found in the surrounding villages.


Franekeradeel has lots to offer if you are looking for recreation. In Tzummarum you can celebrate your holidays at bungalowpark Barradeel. It is located close to the Waddensea, with a rich wildlife. The park has tenniscourts, a heated open air swimmingpool with sun meadow, a mini golf course, organised boat trips, internetacces, and bike rental service.

Recreationpark Bloemketerp in Franeker is the most visited place for recreation in the region. There is a camping, and there are many possiblities for working out, playing tennis and other activities. More than 3500 people visit the park every week and there is room for more than 600 people at the camping.

South of Franeker there is also camping ‘De Skuorre'.

Living in Franekeradeel

In 2006-2007 a new subdivision will be built in Franeker. This is called Franeker-Zuid. The plan shows a diversity of different types of houses in a water rich environment. A recently finished new subdivision is Plan Witzens with its distinctive character, at the edge of Franeker. Sometimes new locations come available downtown Franeker. Old buildings are torn down and replaced with new appartmentbuildings, projects for the elderly to give them a suitable livingspace are part of this as well. When businesses move away, the buildings they used are converted to livingspaces. Franekeradeel wants to stimulate housing above stores downtown, by converting these places into luxury mansions.

Living in the surrounding villages gives you space and quietness. The landscape is stunning, especially the views close to the Waddensea.

Businesses in Franekeradeel

Historically, agriculture is the most important type of business in Franekeradeel. Over time, industry and service providing businesses found Franekeradeel as well. Since it can be reached easily by road, railroad and waterways, Franekeradeel is very attractive for businesses. Franeker has several businessparks, called Oost, West and Zuid. The latest businesspark is KIE, ready for businesses to construct their buildings since 2005, at a great location and for low prices. In the neighbourhood of Sexbierum there are many greenhouses.

The board of B&W

The municipality of Franekeradeel consists of three different bodies: the city council, the board of mayor and aldermen (B&W), and the mayor's office. The relationships between these bodies can be compared with the governing bodies at the national level. The council acts like the lower house of parliament and the board like the cabinet. The board consists of 3 aldermen, the mayor and the secretary of the municipality.

The city council

The citizens of Frankeradeel vote for the city council, the members of the council can be regarded as being ‘in charge' of the municipality. The members of the council determine the policies and checks the board of B&W if these policies are effectively carried out. Every four years the people of Franekeradeel vote for the council, for the period 2006-2010 the parties and the number of seats they hold in the council are: PvdA (5), CDA (5), FNP (3), Gemeentebelang (1), VVD (1), Groen Links (1) and ChristenUnie (1).
